Surrender: For Freedom’s Sake

1. Cease resistance to an enemy or opponent and submit to their authority.

Sounds rather defeating, does it not? “Cease resistance to an enemy…”? “…submit to their authority”? How could that ever be fun? Let’s take a closer look at some synonyms…shall we?

  • Yield
  • Submit
  • Relent
  • Give (oneself)

Very quickly we have learned that surrender seems to be a demoralizing choice. A choice that seems to put us in chains. Most of us, even those who are not very prideful, would have, or have had a hard time surrendering (I know I have). This includes surrendering our time, viewpoints, perspectives, friendships, our preferences, etc. Now that our view on surrender has been established, why not shake it up, and surrender if you will, our established perception almost entirely?

In Matthew 16:24 Jesus had this to say:

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.”

So what does it mean to “deny yourself”? Or to “take up (your) cross”? These are forms of surrender; are they not? So how can it be that surrender, being such a humbling experience, is a good thing!?

Wait… maybe that’s EXACTLY why surrender IS a good thing…It teaches us humility.

“Because of the privilege and the authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning; Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.”

-Romans 12:3

Humility is not about throwing yourself under the bus, or refusing that you have talents, or even about never having a shining moment. To be humble is simple; don’t be arrogant! Always put Christ before yourself, because by putting Him first, you will then lack for nothing. We should surrender our lives over to Christ, not because it is a option to better ourselves, but rather THE ONLY OPTION.

Not proud or arrogant; modest:

to be humble although successful.

Lastly, surrender opens our eyes to the love our Father has for us.

13 For You made the parts inside me. You put me together inside my mother. 14 I will give thanks to You, for the greatness of the way I was made brings fear. Your works are great and my soul knows it very well. 15 My bones were not hidden from You when I was made in secret and put together with care in the deep part of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw me before I was put together. And all the days of my life were written in Your book before any of them came to be.

Psalm 139:13-16

The passage above is MY God! He is YOUR God! The God that “…made the parts inside me…”. The God who’s “…eyes saw me before I was put together. …”

If that is the God that we serve, then why is something like surrendering to Him so hard to do? Is it our doubts of His reality in existence? Look around you…look at nature itself. My last post was about the beauty of nature, and how in its beauty, God’s love and splendor can be seen. I ask you, no, I beg you, to “doubt your doubts”. Those words were within a spoken word I viewed just yesterday. They ring so true. Surrender is FREEDOM! It is not for our demise!!! Freedom to finally feel REAL love, experience TRUE peace, joy, happiness, compassion, mercy, and so much more!

I will leave you with these words:

“Loss is not the result of surrendering to the Father, but rather the acceptance of the freedom He died for you to have.”

Have a blessed, free, joyous day in the presence of the One who placed the stars in the sky. Much love,

  1. Boom. Nate Knowledge. Truly inspiring, my brother. I used to always think I was humble, but maybe that in and of itself is arrogance. It just goes to show, and make me realize, that I can never stop surrendering, and that even if I think I have truly surrendered, I can always take it further. Thank you. I needed this.
